Local Produce

Lancaster Smokehouse

Food for Thought!

The Lancaster, Morecambe & Lune Valley District is distinguished for its locally produced, glorious food. Whether you enjoy Fresh Wild Salmon straight from the River Lune, award- winning Superior Smoked Meats from The Port of Lancaster Smokehouse or the celebrated and unspoilt Morecambe Bay Shrimps, there is sure to something to whet your appetite.

The district offers a wide range of international cuisine through its restaurants, ranging from French Bistros, Italian Pizzerias, Classic Indian Cuisine, Refined Mexican Dishes, Spanish Tapas, delightfully fresh Sea Food, and Authentic Chinese, Cantonese and Japanese Cuisine, not forgetting the fantastic locally produced British Food on offer. Local Restaurants like the Highwayman Inn, at Burrow, have a mission to seek out the best, freshest locally-produced food to serve to people.

The fabulous and award-winning Restaurants are well worthy of the recognition they receive. However, in addition to the hard work from the wonderful staff at local restaurants, there is a further reason for the superior quality of food from the district. A reason, that is time and again overlooked, but which we now pay reverence to, because without these individuals, our food simply would not be our food. Our hats go off to the award-winning local producers from the region.

The succulent shrimps are processed in the same time-honoured way; caught in the sandy estuaries of Morecambe Bay from the traditional 25 foot boats, they are cleaned and boiled at sea in sea-water, peeled by the fishermen's wives and delivered within 36 hours of being caught to the door.

The potting of fish, meat or cheese is one of the great traditions in British cookery. When potted, the Shrimps are seasoned with spices, pressed into a pot and sealed in clarified butter.

The Campaign for Real Gravy

You just can't beat the taste of real gravy - the false taste of instant gravy doesn't even compare. The Campaign for Real Gravy is an initiative being run by the Fenwick Arms, who are working with TV Chef Gordon Ramsay to try and push people away from instant gravy mixes and back to traditionally made, Real Gravy.

In many instant gravy mixes there are colourants, flavourings, additives and preservatives that leads to a gravy that just doesn't compare to the real thing. Campaign for Real Gravy

At the Fenwick Arms there is a passion for real gravy and every day of the week, including their classic Sunday lunches, they're serving up excellent real gravy to pour on your spuds, drizzle over a beautiful piece of beef or fill the well in the best Yorkshire puds this side of the Pennines.

Gordon Ramsay, a devotee of real gravy, is the man to drive the Campaign for Real Gravy forward. TV legend Ramsay, has been banging the drum for real gravy and the Sunday roast in his recent column in the Sunday Times.

The Fenwick Arms and Gordon Ramsay are leading the campaign for people across the country to go back to using real gravy. The Fenwick Arms, situated in Claughton near Lancaster, is a unique gastropub combining a warm and friendly atmosphere with fine cuisine (and real gravy).
