For those interested in local produce perhaps the most famous are the Morecambe Bay Shrimps which are still caught locally by family firms like James Baxter & Sons of Morecambe.
The river yields tasty wild Lune salmon, some of which is smoked locally at the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse. Best beef, lamb and pork is produced throughout the Lune Valley at award winning farms like Mansergh Hall and Nether Hall. Meanwhile farmers from the Forest of Bowland work together under the "Bowland Forest" brand.
To the south of Lancaster, the coastal marshes supply a distinctive salt marsh lamb and one free range poultry producer, Ellel Free Range Poultry, has been hailed as one of Rick Stein's 'Food Heroes'.
Renowned as a thirst-quenching tonic, non-alcoholic Nettle Beer has been drawing people to Heysham village for generations. In Lancaster, real ale is brewed by Brysons and is on sale in many of the district freehouse pubs.
A great way to sample and buy local foods is to visit the excellent Farmers' Markets held monthly in Lancaster and occasionally in Carnforth.
