Cultural Pursuits

Spend a day exploring the fascinating stories of Lancaster by visiting some of the historic buildings and museums open to the public. Before you start pop into Lancaster Visitor Information Centre (opens 10am) to collect some useful information!

A great place to start your tour is at the City Museum in Market Square which has built up collections which stylishly illustrate the history and archaeology of Lancaster and the surrounding area from the Neolithic age to the present day. The museum is open between 10am and 4pm and admission is free.

After lunch (see suggestions below), take time to take a tour around Lancaster Castle, one of the best preserved and hardest working castles in the country. (Guided tours at 30 minute intervals from 10am to 4pm)

Alternatively, take a look at the Maritime Museum located within two fine Georgian quayside buildings using sounds smells and reconstructions to tell the story of the port of Lancaster (Open Daily 11am - 5pm).

For views across the city, head up to the Ashton Memorial, one of the grandest of English follies. The memorial is set within the beautiful parkland of Williamson Park with enchanting walks and provides some great panoramic views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland Fells.

For the evening check out the The Dukes Theatre or The Grand for up to date information on evening performances or www.virtual-lancaster.net for music and other events.

Alternatively, book yourself on a tour of the city with Catwalks of Lancaster. Themed walks include Ghosts & Murderers and Treasure Hunts!
