Lancaster Millennium Bridge

Welcome to Lancaster...

Visit Lancaster's past at its castle and museums, where you can explore the history of the city - from its tantalising stories of witches and murderers to its rich industrial and cultural history.

Stroll through the pedestrianised city centre, browsing in boutique shops and high street stores, and stop off for coffee and cakes at one of the popular coffee shops or out-of-the-way cafés. Lancaster is renowned for its Georgian architecture and hidden “ginnels” – its compact size and welcoming pedestrianised streets invite you to take your time as you explore its sights and attractions.

A walk along St George's Quay, along the River Lune, will highlight Lancaster’s important maritime history as one of the major ports in England - stop in at the Maritime Museum to explore the city’s heritage as a centre for trade and import - there are plenty of interactive exhibits for the kids, and activities are run during the school holidays.

Up the hill lies Williamson Park with its Butterfly House and Ashton Memorial - the green-domed folly, commissioned by Lord Ashton in memory of his wife, is visible from many points in and around Lancaster. Stroll the meadering paths to discover mosaics, sculptures and a sundial.

As a university city, Lancaster's nightlife buzzes with entertainment – enjoy live music in one of the traditional pubs, theatre and film at the Dukes, Nuffield or Grand Theatres or the Vue cinema, and delicious food and drink at the numerous bistros and restaurants. Find out What’s On here.

So why not stay a while and enjoy all there is to experience – choose from boutique bed and breakfasts, convenient city centre hotels or luxurious country house accommodation!
